Q&A - Practice on Private Property

New Driver Signs 2011Our son has an "L" licence and is currently taking a course with a professional driving school. Our Question - is it illegal in BC for him - with his Learner's Licence - to practice on our own private land, providing he does go near the sidewalk or road outside our property line? It would be OK with us if he wanted to practice basic driving skills - such as reversing and 2 and 3 point turns - in our large driveway, before allowing him to do this, we want to be sure it is not illegal.

As long as your son is not impaired by alcohol or a drug while driving a motor vehicle on your (or someone else's, with permission) private property he has nothing to worry about with regard to driver's licence, vehicle licence or insurance.

If something goes wrong and he leaves the property, accidentally or intentionally, then there certainly could be issues!
