Lost My Notice and Order, What Happens if I Ignore it?

I have an outstanding box 3. The repair (front license plate) has been made, but the vehicle was never presented to the detachment for reinspection. I've long since thrown the ticket away and I'm told I need the original for the reinspection. What happens if I just ignore this issue?

Consequences

I've written about the Notice & Order box 3 in another article here on the site.

If you know the issue date and the name or number of the officer that issued the Notice & Order to you it is not necessary to have the form with you when you report to the police to show that you have complied. The person you report to can notify the officer with only this information. If you cannot give this, then you will need the form to identify the officer and show that you have fixed the problem.

The article referenced above does explain about what the worst thing that could happen to you for ignoring the reporting requirement would be. In general however, chances are good that the whole issue would be ignored all together. Very few officers that I knew would spend any time at all following up on box 3's. (Beware, ICBC follows up on all box 1 and box 2 notices and police take it seriously.) Some did, and of course if you ignore it and are found again with the defects present don't expect a second chance, expect a ticket or a box 2 notice.

In summary, you take your chances when you decide to ignore the order. Consequences can range from nothing at all to a ticket for $598. It costs little in time and money to report and it tends to convince the officer to continue to write them instead of  tickets.
