The BC Government has announced the activation of a further 35 digital red light cameras at high risk intersections around the province. The digital cameras replace older film cameras that were rotated through various intersections and will be in place at all intersections equipped for red light cameras by the end of 2011.
The following quote from the release may be cause for concern:
Not all cameras will be activated at the same time. The cameras will be operated strategically, when historical and current data show the risk is greatest. This will maximize both the benefits and cost-effectiveness of the expanded program.
How can it be cost effective to shut off a traffic safety device? Surely the cost of the electricity to leave them running cannot be all that great, and retrieving photos must be part of doing business. It would be interesting to understand the logic of this.
