This report from the Oregon Department of Transportation Research Unit examines the success of systems used to detect the presence of wild animals in the vicinity of highways and activate a warning light system to alert approaching drivers. It seems hard to believe that the achieved speed reduction of less than 2 mph resulted in a 58 to 67% reduction in animal mortality rate where the equipment was installed. Increased driver awareness is more likely the reason for the success rather than the speed reduction.
