RESEARCH - Animal - Vehicle Crash Mitigation Using Advanced Technology

Wildlife Crossing SignThis report from the Oregon Department of Transportation Research Unit examines the success of systems used to detect the presence of wild animals in the vicinity of highways and activate a warning light system to alert approaching drivers. It seems hard to believe that the achieved speed reduction of less than 2 mph resulted in a 58 to 67% reduction in animal mortality rate where the equipment was installed. Increased driver awareness is more likely the reason for the success rather than the speed reduction.
