UN Global Road Safety Week - May 17 to 23, 2021

Love 30 km/hThe focus of the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week is speed management. The Week promotes a 30 km/h speed limit in places where people mix with traffic. Everyone is encouraged to join the #Love30 campaign to call for 30 km/h speed limits to be the norm for cities, towns and villages worldwide.

The Union of BC Municipalities asked the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure in 2019 to consider an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act that would allow incorporated municipalities and regional districts to institute blanket speed zones in residential areas. The province declined to do this and reminded municipalities that this avenue was still open to them by posting signs to accomplish speed reductions.

A number of municipalities around BC have since begun programs of their own to reduce speeds on some residential streets to 30 km.h.

There are many articles about speed on DriveSmartBC if you are curious to learn more.
