Someone Needs a Timeout for Their Approach to School Crosswalk Safety

School CrosswalkI pick up my grand daughters one afternoon a week at their rural elementary school. The kindergarten classes march out in line and wait patiently while their teacher identifies each child's caregiver and dismisses them individually. They now join the free for all to walk to the vehicles parked in the area and go home.

Q&A - School Buses Blocking the Intersection

Q&A ImageI am wondering about the legalities of the school bus stopping in an intersection to discharge students. Rural road, and the bus stops in the intersection like so: / it crosses the center line to provide coverage for crossing students. Stop signs out and flashing lights activated. I believe if the bus were to be involved in an accident at this time, it would be at fault for crossing the center line.

School Zone SignSeven years ago I wrote about a safe trip to school, commenting on my experience that a significant part of the safety problem was caused by teachers and parents themselves. Their driving behaviour as they showed up to work or dropped off their children sometimes left a lot to be desired. Did they not realize that they were creating their own problem?

The School Year Begins Again

School BusWe place a high value on our children and signify that with school and playground zones. Traffic is required to slow to the lowest speed limit that we normally post and drivers are expected to pay more attention than usual. Students must get to and from school safely.

Having said that, sometimes the greatest danger in a school zone is presented by parents and teachers.
