CASE LAW - Vance v Cartwright

BC Courts Coat of ArmsWilliam Vance was riding an unlicenced, uninsured off road motorcycle southbound on 198 Street in Langley, B.C. He was not wearing a helmet and was exceeding the speed limit. Cristine Cartwright was eastbound on 21 Avenue and had stopped at the stop sign before entering 198 Street intending to turn northbound. Vision was limited for drivers on 21 avenue looking northbound by roadside vegetation.

PHOTOS OF CONCERN - Motorcycle Drive Belt

cameraThe drive belt and pulleys of this motorcycle are completely exposed presenting a significant danger to the driver if clothing becomes entangled while the motorcycle is moving.

Q&A - Pushing a Motorcycle on the Sidewalk

motorcycleI am aware that it is against regulations to park or stop on a sidewalk. Is 'Pushing' covered under the motor vehicle act? (pushing with the vehicle turned off and not riding in any way)

For example, say a motorcycle runs out of fuel, and the vehicle operator feels that leaving the motorcycle on the road wouldn't be the best thing to do, and that pushing the motor vehicle on the road seems unsafe.

VIDEO - Motorcycle ABS Demonstration

video iconIt will only take 14 seconds to watch this split screen video demonstration of ABS braking by two motorcycles on wet pavement. Chances are good that those 14 seconds will convince you that ABS is a must have on your next motorcycle if you don't have it already.

VIEWPOINT - Benefits of lane filtering

motorcycleMy Definition of Lane filtering:  When a motorcycle moves through traffic in between stationary vehicles.

Being a Driver in England I am very familiar with filtering through stopped traffic, as as Car driver I would allow space for motorcycles to pass. As a Motorcycle Driver I would drive very slowly between the vehicles (under 10kph)

VIDEO - Lane Splitting

video iconThis 30 second video reminds riders about the types of risks they are exposed to every time they ride and that no matter who is at fault, they are likely to come of second best in a crash. Riders underestimate the level of risk they are exposed to and that many ignore the options that can assist them in reducing their level of risk.

CASE LAW - R v Dickson

BC Courts Coat of ArmsThis Supreme Court case from 2003 is useful to illustrate two topics: lane splitting by motorcyclists is illegal in BC and traffic court justices may prohibit drivers based on a bad driving record and have the prohibition upheld by the higher courts.

Q&A - Passengers on a Scooter

motorcycleI was hoping to find out if it is legal to ride a Yamaha BWS50 50cc scooter and take a passenger. I assumed it was legal to ride with passenger but my neighbour thinks it is not legal. Any assistance is appreciated.

CASE LAW - R v Rei

BC Courts Coat of ArmsIs it a Motor Assisted Cycle (MAC) or a Limited Speed Motorcycle (LSM)? In the case of R v Rei it all comes down to whether there are pedals installed so that the driver may physically propel the device or not.

NEWS - Changes to Motorcycle Safety Laws

BC FlagThe Minister of Justice announced changes to the Motor Vehicle Act affecting motorcycle helmets and motorcycle passengers. Effective June 1, 2012 all motorcycle riders who are not exempt will have to wear an approved motorcycle helmet that bears approval markings showing that they comply with established standards.
