commercial vehicle chain signYesterday we drove up the Coquihalla from Hope, the plow trucks were doing a wonderful job on the highway but there was no care taken to plow out the chain-up pull-outs for commercial trucks. So now the trucks are all lined up along the right lane of the road, thus forcing regular traffic into one lane.

commercial vehicle chain signI am trying to get confirmation on the law regarding chain requirements for a BC commercial 55 passenger bus for winter driving.

The wording of the law is ambiguous. It states that school buses must carry chains and Commercial transport trucks must carry chains when driving on the highway, but that passenger vehicles are not required to carry chains.

HOURS OF SERVICE - Operating Within 160 km

Pedestrian CrossingCommercial drivers operating within a 160 km radius of their home base are not required to record their hours of service in a log book. However, they are still required to abide by the hours of service rules which, even with a log book, is not a simple task. To insure that this is being done, the carrier is required to maintain the record instead of the driver. Operating Within the 160 km is an article provided by Safety Driven (Trucking Safety Council of BC) detailing the importance of the carrier maintaining proper records.

BC Courts Coat of ArmsHarvey Truax stopped his empty B train combination on the shoulder of Highway 1 near Sorrento, B.C. He allowed the 4 vehicles that had been following him to pass by before he started to make a left turn across the highway into a pullout.
