Information on specific vehicle equipment.

Being Seen

Daytime Running LightsModel year 1990 is an important date in Canadian traffic safety history. Regardless of what type of vehicle you have, car, bus or truck, if it was produced in this model year or is newer it must have been manufactured with daytime running lights. More importantly still, BC laws require that if the vehicle was produced with daytime running lights those lights must be operating properly in order to drive legally today.

Coloured Lights

Colored LightsThe lights that our vehicle is equipped with serve two important functions. They allow us to see and they allow us to be seen by other road users. The messages conveyed to others by our vehicle's lights must be clear with no opportunity for confusion.

Tire Inflation

Tire GuageWhen was the last time you checked the air in your vehicle's tires? Do you own a tire gauge? Do you know what the proper inflation pressure is for your tires? If you don't, where do you find this information?

White, Yellow & Red Only!

Colored LightsI've got a suggestion: colour of exterior lights and reflectors. Lots of kids replace amber bulbs with blue, red ones with clear, red lenses with clear, amber reflectors with green, bulbs with LEDs, etc. I get a lot of heartbreaking letters from parents, "My kid just got a ticket...are blue parking lights really illegal?!"

Preventative Maintenance

Car RepairWould you do a column on the importance of vehicle maintenance? Not only regarding upkeep of tires, fluids, brakes, or suspension, but also the importance of regularly checking to ensure all the lights on the vehicle are clean and in good working order.

Window Tinting

Tinted WindowsWindow tinting looks cool, keeps your vehicle interior cool, or hides your vehicle contents from potential thieves. The drawback with tinting certain windows is that it limits the driver's ability to see and be seen. It is also illegal and may result in enforcement action in the form of either a ticket or a repair order.

Use Your Headlights!

HeadlightsOne of my pet peeves is drivers who do not have lights on during the day .... particularly when it is foggy, raining very hard, or there is a very dark overcast. On our last trip we saw many vehicles with no tail lights on. It was very dark out because of low, thick clouds and rain and the lack of lights is a recipe for an accidental meeting.

Your Teen's Vehicle

teens carWe are an affluent society. Teens today own vehicles in numbers only dreamed about when I was that age. Often their disposable income doesn't end there and many dollars are spent on vehicle modifications and improvements.

Coloured Lights Tell Us Something
