A Pedestrian with a Death Wish

Walk SignalThe collision counter on this web site estimates 33 pedestrian deaths and 1374 pedestrian injury collisions in BC to July 29, 2015. I almost added to that number driving in Vancouver last weekend and the incident still has me shaking my head. I can't believe that a pedestrian could be that stupid!

VIDEO - Abbotsford Police Road Safety Pedestrian Video

video iconIt appears that the Abbotsford Police Department is following the lead of other agencies such as TACVictoria with a no-punches-pulled video reminding drivers to yield to pedestrians and not drive while distracted. It could equally well be used to remind pedestrians to watch for vehicles when they use a marked crosswalk. Just because you are in the crosswalk does not mean that you are safe. You should be monitoring approaching traffic to insure that it is going to stop before stepping in front of it.

Q&A - Unsafe Walking to & From School

Q&A ImageWhile walking my 11 year old son to Van Horne Elementary this morning- yes I have to walk him because of the poor driving in my neighbourhood there was a dangerous situation at the corner of 43rd and Ontario St. My son and I were headed west on 43rd and had the right of way. We looked to ensure no cars were coming in any direction and step into the intersection.

VIDEO - Three Invisible Pedestrians

video iconThere're quite a few accidents daily in Vancouver, pedestrians being hit. Just last night, someone was hit in New West and they had to close Stewardson Way. Its crazy the way people walk here. Full deep black is not visible through a wet screen with a thousand lights flashing in your eyes from the oncoming cars lights.

Mobility Scooters - Use, Misuse and Abuse

Covered ScooterLife must present quite a challenge when you are no longer able to walk very far under your own power. The mobility scooter is a blessing for those who can afford one. It gives much greater range than predecessors that were powered for however long your arms could push. In fact, I checked a man zooming down the side of a freeway in a shiny new one.

RESOURCE - Plan a Safe Route to School

School Crossing Guardschoolzone is a very interesting app created during a hackathon using open data provided by ICBC and the provincial government. Visit the site, enter your home address, your child's school address and press GO to find the most direct route to the school displayed on the map. The map also displays crash locations. To avoid them, simply drag the route to adjust it to a safer path.

Pedestrians: Vulnerable Road Users

Walk SignalYesterday in a four hour period @ScanBC reported a half dozen vehicle / pedestrian collisions around the province on Twitter. Today while out walking during my lunch hour I watched a woman jogging with her back to traffic, in the lane instead of on the sidewalk, while wearing earbuds. A van squeezed between me and the curb as I crossed an intersection on the walk to my vehicle to get home. Are you surprised that these collisions are occurring?

Q&A - More Signs and Safety Evaluations

Walk SignalI don't know where to start and thought this would be a good first step.

I live close to the intersection of Raynor and Craigflower rd. which has a marked crosswalk that is frequently used by young families, the elementary school, and a preschool to access Banfeild park. Today what happened was to close of a call from me to just let this incident slide.

Q&A - I Was Hit by a Car Today

Q&A ImageI was hit by a car today in Ladysmith BC. I was walking my dog on the sidewalk a car drove out of the drive thru , did not look and hit me hard enough to knock me a few feet to the ground. I call the rcmp. No charges for the driver. I seemed to be at fault. Please explain

VIDEO - The Unpredictable Pedestrian

video iconA lot can happen in just the 23 seconds of this video contributed by Orang Gila, taken in Maple Ridge, just past the Safeway at Dewdney Trunk Road. Keep an eye out for the pedestrian on the right sidewalk mid-block who is clearly dithering about crossing the street and is having difficulty finding a large enough gap in the four lanes of traffic that she must cross on the busy street.
