Q&A - School Zones in the Summer Time

Q&A ImageIn Parksville, around the Oceanside Middle School, the school zone sign remains up during the summer. It states the speed to be 30 km/h and underneath a sign says "school days." Other areas do not have the notation of "school days" but do leave up their 30 km/h sign during the summer in the Oceanside area.

Q&A - Where Does a School Zone End?

Q&A ImageThere is a school near where I live, with a 30km/hr school zone. Driving one way passed the school, you encounter the School Zone sign, but after you pass the school, there is no corresponding sign showing the speed increase to 50 km/hr - despite the fact that the speed for oncoming drivers is 50km/hr and they have a Scool Zone sign on that side of the road.

Q&A - Requesting Speed Enforcement

Q&A ImageI've been living in the Armstrong Elementary school area for the last 1.5 years and I have never seen any speed traps to enforce the school zone speed limit. It beginning to feel like I'm the only one who knows the speed limit is 30 km/h in the school zone.

My question is, would you happen to know if its as simple as calling the RCMP and suggesting to them this be a place to set up a speed trap?

Q&A - It Wasn't a School Zone

Q&A ImageCurrently, I am disputing a ticket I received back in June; I was clocked on radar doing 60 km/h through a school zone and was alleged to have violated Section 147(1). However, the section of road I was travelling on is a fairly busy two-lane road, and as such the signs indicating the school zone do not have the "30 km/h" speed limit sign under them.

RESEARCH - Seatbelts on the School Bus

School BusI am frequently asked why school buses don't have seatbelts. The Alabama School Bus Seat Belt Pilot Project put seatbelts in school buses and studied their benefits. The study found a wearing rate of just under 62%. This resulted in, on average, saving 0.13 lives and 7.60 injuries per year. The seat belts were 39% effective in reducing fatalities and 13% effective in reducing injuries.

ROADSENSE TIPS - School Zones

ICBC LogoSchool's back, and that means 30 km/h school zones are also in effect. A car travelling at 50 km/h in ideal conditions takes 37 metres to stop. At 30 km/h, you can stop in less than half that distance. ICBC's tip features a crossing guard explaining why it's so important drivers slow down in school zones.

CASE LAW - R v Ashir

BC Courts Coat of ArmsThe case of R v Ashir was heard in traffic court before Judicial Justice of the Peace H.W. Gordon in Victoria, B.C. The dispute involved a traffic ticket for speeding in a school zone and the determination of what was meant by "a regular school day." Justice Gordon also comments on what he sees as deficiencies in the wording of the section that would prevent the conviction of drivers traveling over 30 km/h in a school zone under certain conditions.

RESEARCH - Distracted Drivers in School Zones

Safe Kids USA logoSafe Kids USA has released a report that explores the extent to which drivers are engaging in other activities while traveling through school zones. It is very likely that the observations made in this report are representative of distracted driving behaviours that occur in BC school zones as well.

ROADSENSE TIPS - Slow Down in a School Zone

ICBC LogoSeptember means kids are heading back to school, so drivers need to be extra careful. Remember that school zones are in effect again and that means lower speed limits. This month's tip will help remind you what to watch out for in school zones.

School Crossing Guards

The crossing guard is taking on a big responsibility when it comes to helping our children cross busy highways and intersections on their way to and from school each day. Traffic is in a hurry, the children don't always pay the attention that they should and sometimes the road conditions are poor or visibility is not good. It is not a job to be taken lightly! The system works well, except when someone disobeys.
