ROADSENSE TIPS - Cell Phones and the GLP

ICBC LogoThis video, produced by ICBC, looks at why banning communication device use by drivers keeps our roads safer by keeping drivers focused on the task of driving. This applies to new drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program especially as they have not developed the necessary skills to spare attention for non-driving related tasks.

The Collision Repair Company's Courtesy Vehicle

Toy CarI was sitting at a red light this afternoon watching the approaching traffic. Two vehicles entered the left turn lane on the street to my left, one unremarkable and the other covered in advertising telling me that it was the courtesy vehicle for a well known collision repair company. Both were signaling for the left turn.

Over Wattage Headlight Bulbs

Low Beam Headlight PatternLast week's column on overdriving low beam headlights resulted in some interesting comments. Chief among them was the thought that this wasn't a problem because the driver had installed high wattage bulbs and now had more light to see with. Do you suppose that these drivers don't know this is a bad practice or just don't care about themselves and others who use the highway?

Night Driving Glasses

Night Driving GlassesI've had a couple of regular correspondents ask me recently about night driving glasses. These glasses have yellow lenses and are supposed to cut glare and increase contrast allowing you to see better in the darkness. After a bit of research, it appears that using these glasses is not a good idea.

VIDEO - Distracted Driving

VideoThis video is part of an advertising campaign by the Transport Accident Commission in Australia. It shows graphically the possible consequences of being distracted by mobile phone use while driving.

In Car Television

In Car TelevisionIs it legal to install a television set in a vehicle? There are two answers to this question, one simple and the other complicated. Driver distraction and the possibility of a collision resulting from it is a very real concern.

Taking the Wrong Cue

Red Traffic SignalWe take many of our driving cues from what is happening around us when we are in traffic. If we are paying attention and watching for the correct cues all goes well. Stop paying full attention to the driving task, accidentally take the wrong cues and you can easily cause a collision.

VIDEO - Drive Safe, Phone Safe

VideoThis 30 second video puts tongue in cheek and parodies a driving school lesson where a young woman learns to do everything wrong while driving and dealing with her cell phone. Apparently some of today's drivers think that this is the right way to drive....
