Delivering the Wrong Message

ExclamationA serious single vehicle collision occurred in the Shawnigan Lake Area on September 1st. Four 19 year olds were hurt, two critically, after the driver spilled an iced cappuccino on herself and subsequently lost control of her vehicle. She struck the right curb, overcorrected and crossed the highway, rolling down an embankment and coming to rest against some trees.

Q&A - I Was Not Stunting

New Driver Signs 2011I was driving my parents car a few days ago it is a Mustang and I got it impounded for 7 days. The police officer accused me of doing a burnout, revving the engine and fishtailing. Not once did i rev my engine or do a burnout I do admit to fishtailing. The fishtailing was not intentional at all, my traction control and everything was on, it just happened.

BC's Bad Driver of the Week

Perhaps a public shaming could be effective in convincing some drivers that they need to share the roadway a bit better with the rest of us. Now that I have my own dash cam I am in a position to highlight how some people put themselves ahead of others when it comes to convenience over road safety. This particular driver overtook on the painted traffic island on Mostar Road in Nanaimo, B.C.

PHOTOS OF CONCERN - Overweight

cameraThis interesting looking vehicle was checked at the Parksville weigh scale. As evidenced by the tops of the rear tires almost scrubbing against the top of the wheel wells, it was considerably overweight. Commercial trucks are not the only vehicles on the highway that may be removed from the highway if safe loading rules are not followed, this one was too. The driver likely didn't need to look at the vehicle capacity ratings on the sticker in the driver's door opening area to know that he should not have loaded the car like this, but if he had, it would have told him the maximum safe weights for the load.

Turn on Your Lights!

Headlight SwitchIt's not often that I write about vehicles having too few lights illuminated. Too many, the wrong colour, using them in improper circumstances, yes, but everyone knows that they need to turn their lights on when it is dark or visibility is poor, right? Not so according to many e-mails sent to DriveSmartBC when daylight is in short supply.

VIDEO - Texting While Driving

video icon"This powerful video being used as part of a new campaign at high schools in the United Kingdom to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. With the help of actors and special effects, the video graphically shows the crash and aftermath of what could happen when a driver is distracted."

Oncoming Traffic Failing to Keep Right

Unsafe PassOne thing worse than what you described last week is when there is a road obstruction and people seem to think they have the right to cross the centre line into on coming traffic. Maybe you could address the legal side of that. My understanding is that on coming traffic has the right of way.

Cutting the Corner

Cutting the CornerI live beside a road where I can watch an "S" curve out of my window and visibility is limited due to vegetation on both sides. I don't have to watch for long before a see a driver who "straightens out the S" by driving more or less in a straight line through the corners.

How to Politely Allow a Traffic Violation

Share the Road SignI'm almost always pleased to see another driver exercise courtesy on our highways because it cancels out some of the selfishness that I see every day. I say almost because I saw a misguided act of kindness today that left me shaking my head. One driver made room so that the other driver could make an illegal lane change from a side road through surrounding standing traffic.
