VIDEO - Snowplow Safety

video iconFrom the video description: If you are travelling BC highways during the winter months please be prepared and be aware - drive to conditions and take your time to get where you’re going. Our maintenance contractors are out there clearing our highways and provincial roads to make it safer for those driving on them and so we are asking anyone who is on the road with a snow plow to please steer clear and let them clear the road. It is never safe to pass a snow plow on the right or weave between plows when they are clearing the road.

VIDEO - How to Shoulder Check

video iconHere are two videos on shoulder checking featuring Rick from Smart Drive Test. He tends to wave his arms a lot, but the messages that he delivers are clear and concise. If you find them useful, there are currently 86 videos on the YouTube Smart Drive Test channel.

BC Bad Pedestrian of the Week

This one is a bit different as the pedestrian in the video is the subject misbehaving, not the driver. It does show a need to take into account clues from traffic around you as the driver behind me didn't visibly react to the pedestrian wandering into the lane again after I had slowed.

VIDEOS - AARP Smart Driver Course

video iconThis series of videos produced by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is part of their Smart Driver course. Applicable to drivers of all ages, the focus is on the mature driver.

VIDEO - Reducing Your Risks in the Crash

video iconYou probably never give it much thought, hop in, throw on the seatbelt and drive away. Chances are that if it's your vehicle you don't have to adjust the seat either. I wonder if you've ever read your owner's manual on properly adjusting your seat or your seatbelt? For those of you who have not or don't remember, here's a video from the IIHS to help make sure that you are effectively restrained in the event of a crash. It's the best way to minimize your chance of injury or death if you can't avoid the collision.

VIDEO - Why You Need to Clean ALL the Snow Off Your Vehicle

video iconIt's easy to be lazy and just clean the windows of your vehicle in snowy weather. Leaving a little light snow to blow off isn't a big deal. However, when the snow is left there and turns into ice, the result of having a chunk of it blow off at speed can be serious. In this video a large chunk shatters the windshield of the vehicle following behind. Imagine what it might have done to an unlucky pedestrian.

CHILD RESTRAINT - Beware of Winter Clothing

Booster SeatBulky winter clothing could put your child at risk by reducing or defeating the protection provided by a child restraint. The video below shows how a crash test dummy in a bulky winter coat slides between the straps of a child restraint in a simulated 50 km/h frontal collision. The coat prevents the straps from tightening properly against the child's body. Remember, if you pinch the straps between your fingers you must not be able to fold any of the strap. If you can, it is still too loose.

VIDEO - How a Driverless Car Sees the Road

video iconFrom the video's description on the TED web site:

Statistically, the least reliable part of the car is ... the driver. Chris Urmson heads up Google's driverless car program, one of several efforts to remove humans from the driver's seat. He talks about where his program is right now, and shares fascinating footage that shows how the car sees the road and makes autonomous decisions about what to do next.

VIDEO - Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

video iconThis short video by the Tire Industry Association explains what your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) does and why it is important to know when any of your tires are underinflated. Aside from the safety benefits, the TPMS system can  decrease irregular tire wear, improve your vehicle’s handling, reduce braking distance and better your fuel economy.

VIDEO - Abbotsford Police Road Safety Pedestrian Video

video iconIt appears that the Abbotsford Police Department is following the lead of other agencies such as TACVictoria with a no-punches-pulled video reminding drivers to yield to pedestrians and not drive while distracted. It could equally well be used to remind pedestrians to watch for vehicles when they use a marked crosswalk. Just because you are in the crosswalk does not mean that you are safe. You should be monitoring approaching traffic to insure that it is going to stop before stepping in front of it.
