VIDEO - Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

video iconThis short video by the Tire Industry Association explains what your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) does and why it is important to know when any of your tires are underinflated. Aside from the safety benefits, the TPMS system can  decrease irregular tire wear, improve your vehicle’s handling, reduce braking distance and better your fuel economy.

BC Bad Driver of the Week 4

Bad DriverI'll partially attribute this to the driver as he has some stake in how he continues to drive when his passenger is in an obviously risky position. In the event of an airbag deployment this person will suffer significant injury. It may only include loss of part of her feet as shown in the link below the video, but isn't that serious enough?

BC Bad Driver of the Week - 643WNH

Bad DriverThis overtaking driver fails to signal his intention, passes on the right travelling off of the roadway and then fails to stop for the stop sign. He's being selfish by refusing to wait his turn and complicating the traffic flow at the intersection for other drivers. I'm tempted to make my left turn from a position nearer to the right edge of the lane when I see this coming in my rear view mirror, but this is not correct. One must position their vehicle near the center line in preparation for a left turn.

VIDEO - Abbotsford Police Road Safety Pedestrian Video

video iconIt appears that the Abbotsford Police Department is following the lead of other agencies such as TACVictoria with a no-punches-pulled video reminding drivers to yield to pedestrians and not drive while distracted. It could equally well be used to remind pedestrians to watch for vehicles when they use a marked crosswalk. Just because you are in the crosswalk does not mean that you are safe. You should be monitoring approaching traffic to insure that it is going to stop before stepping in front of it.

THREE STRIKES - I'm Out!

SoapboxOne of the more frequently asked questions that I receive from visitors to this site concerns reporting bad driving behaviour to the police and having the offending driver held accountable. Until recently, I would point the person to the article Q&A - Making a Driving Report to the Police and encourage them to take an active role in the complaint so that something effective would be done. When I was working and received an earnest complaint I would take the time to investigate it and issue a ticket if warranted. If not, I would explain the situation fully to the complainant when I thought that I would be unsuccessful prosecuting and decided not to issue a ticket. I cannot recall an unsuccessful prosecution of a ticket like this as the driving behaviour that led to it was usually so far out of the norm that it was easy for the justice to decide.

VIDEO - How to Drive at an Intersection With a Bike Box

video iconThis video is provided by the City of Guelph, Ontario and shows drivers how to drive at an intersection where a bike box is present.

BC Bad Driver of the Week - Slow Down, Move Over, Fail!

This video shows at least three drivers in the right hand lane who fail to slow down and move over for a service truck showing flashing yellow lights working on a breakdown at the roadside. There was at least 20 seconds of lead time to recognize the situation and react to it before passing the stopped vehicles. Space did exist in the left hand lane to move over into as traffic was light at the time.

VIDEO - Importance of Proper Child Restraint Installation

video iconThe YouTube description of this video says that "Simulated crash tests show the importance of proper child restraint installation. Most parents don't realize they need to use the top tethers for forward-facing child restraints. Attaching the top tether keeps the restraint from pitching too far forward in a crash putting children at risk of head or neck injuries. Tethers are key to getting the most protection from a child restraint."

BC Bad Driver of the Week EP1186

Here is another aggressive driver who has to be first rather than wait his turn. This incident takes place where highway 19A merges onto highway 19 northbound at the north end of Nanaimo. This pickup driver swoops over the solid line separating the acceleration lane from the highway and immediately moves to the left most northbound lane travelling in excess of the speed limit.
