COLLISIONS – Why You May Face a Lengthy Highway Closure

Collision PhotoOccasionally you may find yourself waiting in a long line of vehicles for extended periods because a collision has temporarily shut down a highway. Here are some insights as to why the RCMP, working with the area highways contractor, has closed the road.

A collision will fall into one of three categories: Property Damage, Serious Injury, or Fatality.

Delivering the Wrong Message

ExclamationA serious single vehicle collision occurred in the Shawnigan Lake Area on September 1st. Four 19 year olds were hurt, two critically, after the driver spilled an iced cappuccino on herself and subsequently lost control of her vehicle. She struck the right curb, overcorrected and crossed the highway, rolling down an embankment and coming to rest against some trees.

Q&A - Police Using Cell Phones When Driving

Q&A ImageI was wondering if you could cover a subject that is a pet peeve of mine. I have observed some RCMP members using a cell phone while driving their patrol car. Are they exempt from this law? I thought distracted driving was distracted driving. I see this happen at least once a week.

Q&A - Failing to Stop for Police

Q&A ImageHello.. I have a wee question that your experience might be able to offer some perspective for? I received a traffic citation for failing to obey an officer.

Q&A - Police Discretion on Excessive Speeding

Q&A ImageFriends of my parents were returning from Vancouver to Kelowna this past weekend and were pulled over for doing 44 km over the speed limit.  It was a family of 4 returning from a hockey tourney.  The officer said i could give you an excessive speeding ticket and have your car impounded to which the driver repiled i didn't realize the speed was that low here....it was an area 20 to 30 min from Merritt heading to ke

Q&A - Evidence of Radar Calibration

Q&A ImageThe police officer used a radar gun and, according to him, there are no service or calibration records on the radar gun. This is a real, live issue for my trial.  If the radar gun does not have service records, then how do we know that it is functioning correctly?

Answer: we don’t. So, that brings us to the next issue: is that going to matter for my trial?

Automated Licence Plate Recognition

Ticket WriterAutomated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) is a tool that is being used more frequently for traffic law enforcement in B.C. Cameras mounted on police vehicles scan vehicle licence plates as they pass and compare them to a computer database. A "hit" in the database is announced to the patrolling officer and the vehicle will be stopped for investigation.

Can't I Just....

Expired drivers licenses, no lights, no trailer brakes, a little to much to drink and you are being told to park your vehicle at the roadside and this is the end of your journey.  Can't I just drive home?  I’m only few blocks away....

Your Worship, the Officer was a Jerk!

GavelYou've just received a traffic ticket and that fact hasn't shed any sunshine on your day. It's bad enough that this has happened, but from your point of view the officer was less than gracious when they issued it to you. I'll dispute the ticket and tell the court exactly what I think may cross your mind as you consider your situation. Surely the justice will see my point and give me a break!

Q&A - Let's Make a Deal for Excessive Speeding

Q&A ImageI was issued a speeding ticket a year ago for excessive speeding.  I was found travelling 125km/h in an 80km/h zone.  I disputed the ticket and last week was issued a court date.  I requested disclosure from the officer.  He stated as he is quite busy he would like to offer me 2 pleas.

1.  Plead guilty to regular speeding, pay $138 and receive 3 demerit points.
