BC Bad Driver of the Week - 866XPV

Sometimes your day just doesn't go right. This driver found himself driving the wrong way and trapped there by the median when he tried to turn left. Fortunately we both stopped before we ran into each other and I waited patiently while he decided what to do. The other oncoming lanes were too busy to try a U turn, so he chose to back out and continue, probably to the correct left turn bay.

The Proper Position for Turning

BC Bad Cyclist of the Week

This video takes place at the intersection of Jingle Pot Road and the Nanaimo Parkway in Nanaimo, B.C. The rider of this electric bicycle is behaving like a pedestrian by operating on the left side of the highway and using crosswalks. This is not an issue if the rider dismounts and pushes the cycle. If she intended to ride legally, she needs to be on the right hand side of the highway following the same rules as other motorized traffic.

They slow traffic at intersections without stopping it, providing good throughput and increased safety. They are also environmentally friendly as idle time at intersections can be reduced or eliminated depending on traffic volume. All that is left for us to do, if my e-mail is any indication, is to learn to use them properly.

Left Turns Into the Correct Lane

CASE LAW - Olchowy v Tomkulak

BC Courts Coat of ArmsThis is the story of a two vehicle collision that happened in the uncontrolled intersection of Jervis Street and Gordon Avenue in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Michelle Olchowy was travelling south on Jervis Street and Clifford Tomkulak was travelling east on Gordon Avenue. Ms. Olchowy entered the intersection within a second or fraction of a second of Mr. Tomkulak.

CASE LAW - Vance v Cartwright

BC Courts Coat of ArmsWilliam Vance was riding an unlicenced, uninsured off road motorcycle southbound on 198 Street in Langley, B.C. He was not wearing a helmet and was exceeding the speed limit. Cristine Cartwright was eastbound on 21 Avenue and had stopped at the stop sign before entering 198 Street intending to turn northbound. Vision was limited for drivers on 21 avenue looking northbound by roadside vegetation.

A Green Light Doesn't Always Mean Go

Green LightThe next time you are at the front of the lineup waiting for the signal to turn green, watch the driver beside you. Many times when the traffic signal turns green they will immediately proceed without looking to the left or right for hazards or traffic already lawfully in the intersection. A green light doesn't always mean go.

VIDEO - The Philosophy of the Stop Sign

If you approach thinking "stop", you are more apt to grant the required right of way to other road users. If you approach intending to slow down just enough to avoid a ticket, you are thinking "go" and will be less likely to take the necessary action, stopping, if you are required to grant right of way to others.
