Is Slow Driving Unacceptable?

Slow DriverArgh! The driver in front of me is not doing the speed limit! Yes, I’ll admit that I often feel the this way, even when the speed differential is as low as 5 to 10 km/h. I have to tell myself to relax and follow along until there is a safe opportunity to pass by or even be satisfied with reducing my own speed to match and not worrying about it. The trouble is, that only works if you don’t have a schedule to keep and in some circumstances slow driving can be dangerous.

Q&A - Logging Trucks in Residential Areas

Q&A ImageAre the drivers of these masive trucks carring large and very heavy logs taught in their Commerical Vehicle Driving School how important it is ( or should be ) that they obey the road signs perticulary in Residental areas . Judging by what I see in my small community sometimes plagued  by these noisy vehicles I think not .

NEWS - Variable Speed Limit Signs Activated

Variable Speed SignVariable speed signs are now operational in three areas of British Columbia. The signs will be changed to moderate traffic speeds during poor weather in an effort to prevent collisions. On site weather and road condition monitors report to the regional traffic management center in Coquitlam where staff will change the speed signs remotely. A flashing yellow light on the top of the sign will flash when the speed had been reduced to reinforce the fact that action must be taken by drivers.

Slow Down, Breathe Easier

ExhaustI’m in a world of mixed messages. Some are real, some are emotional, some are false and some come from the government. The one that I would like to tackle here might be a bit odd for DriveSmartBC but the consequences could be related back to safety. I’m thinking about travel speed and fuel economy because the faster you go, the more it costs, probably in more ways than one.

RESEARCH - The Effectiveness of Speed Cameras

RAC Foundation LogoLove 'em or hate 'em, speed enforcement cameras save lives. This review of the evidence of the British experience with speed camera enforcement shows that camera use results in a substantial improvement in compliance with speed limits, a particular reduction in extreme speeding, a marked reduction in average speed at fixed sites and an appreciable, though more modest, reduction at mobile sites.

What Does a Construction Speed Zone Cost?

Road ConstructionWhat construction zone? I didn't see any signs back there! This irate motorist was very definite expressing what she thought about the traffic ticket I was issuing her for speeding in a construction zone. I suggested that once we were done I would be happy to help her make a U-turn so that she could go back and check on the signs.

Q&A - What if You WANT to do the Speed Limit?

Q&A ImageWhat advice do you have when driving in heavy traffic that is averaging 25 to 30 km. over the posted speed?  I was crossing Lake Okanagan bridge a few days ago  in the right lane and if I went 15 to 20 km. over the 60 km.

CASE LAW - Link v ICBC Appeal

BC Courts Coat of ArmsThis is a case from the BC Court of Appeal that upholds a judgement from the Supreme Court. The incident in question occurred when Peter Link was driving his Jaguar in a snowstorm on Highway 99 between the Highway 10 and Highway 91 exits in Richmond. He was driving at a speed between 40 and 60 km/h when he was passed by an SUV that threw a large amount of snow onto his windshield as it passed by. Mr. Link was unable to see as his wipers could not clear the windshield sufficiently quickly. When he braked he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the median barrier.

Q&A - Speed Warning Entered in Database?

Q&A ImageI received a warning this evening, for speeding. I was trying to get out of the way of the person behind me (who ended up being a police officer). Anyway, he told me my name would be in some sort of data base in case an officer sees me and pulls me over for speeding again.

VIEWPOINT - Lobbying for Vision Zero

SoapboxI am concerned about the increased speed limit on high way 19. Unfortunately , there have been 3 fatalities on this divided high way, within the Comox Valley, in the past month. Although I do not regularly drive high way 19, I have observed that  too many drivers travel faster than the 120 KPH posted speed limit. Some do not slow down during heavy rains or reduced visibility , treating the posted speed as the minimum.
