NEWS - Use of Alternative Traction Devices

TranBC logoIn January 2011 CVSE announced that an alternative to conventional tire chains was now being allowed in British Columbia for commercial vehicles. The bulletin said that the use of pneumatic automatically deployed tire chains for commercial vehicles will fulfill the requirements of section 208 of the Motor Vehicle Act. This section requires winter tires or the carrying of tire chains in posted winter tire / chain control areas of the province.

It also announced the approval for use of the Autosock fabric traction device for light vehicles.

The bulletin was withdrawn after re-examination of the legislation contained in the Motor Vehicle Act. Neither of these devices is currently approved and only conventional tire chains will meet the requirements of Section 208.
