The City of Kamloops and School District 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) have teamed up to test a Safer School Streets pilot project at Arthur Hatton Elementary School. The project was timed to coincide with GoByBike week May 29 to June 9, 2023. It created a car free perimeter around the school during pick up and drop off times.

Every year in Canada, drivers kill 16 child pedestrians and 5 child cyclists. They also injure 1,300 and 700 respectively. Sadly most of these incidents are preventable and we can do things to make it safer for children to walk or ride a bicycle in our community.
School crosswalk safety should be a high priority for parents who drive to drop off and pick up their children each day. They are supposed to be the responsible ones who provide the good example in what is often a confusion of traffic.
