Have you ever wondered what the road maintenance standards for B.C. are? How long do we have to wait for snow removal in the winter? How quickly does a pothole need to be repaired? Who is responsible for maintenance and repairs? Some of the answers may surprise you.
Maintenance Standards Video
A BCGEU employee has published a short video explanation on YouTube. The video explains who is responsible for the maintenance in your area. It also tells you how to advise them that a problem exists so that it can be remedied.
Provincial Road Maintenance Specifications
The provincial government's website provides more comprehensive advice. The maintenance specifications for all provincially owned highways and side roads are published there.
Questions relating to province-wide maintenance programs can be directed by email to Maintenance.Programs@gov.bc.ca.
Road Maintenance Contractors
Private companies are contracted by the province to maintain our highways. Service boundary maps show their areas of responsibility. The contractors are overseen by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit to insure that they meet the standards.
Municipal Maintenance Standards
B.C.'s municipalities set their own maintenance standards. The City of Vancouver's website contains an example of this information. It is significantly less detailed than the information provided by the province.
Reporting Road Hazards
Reporting hazards or questions relating to individual provincial service areas should be submitted directly to the respective contractor.
If the hazard is present on a municipal road, contact the appropriate municipal engineering department for assessment and repair.
If the hazard is significant, you should also consider notifying the police. They can respond immediately and protect everyone while waiting for the contractor to respond.
Maintenance Related Damage Claims
Drivers may make damage claims if they suffer injury or damage to their vehicle as a result of construction or road maintenance activities.

Soon as I see Tony Whitney's name associated with anything automotive I just go back to 1990. Don't know how many would remember the TV show Driver's Seat which was hosted by Ted Laturnus and Tony Whitney.
A person had written in asking why so many people were driving with their headlight on. This was in 1990 after all cars produced and imported into Canada were legislated to be so equipped. I was floored when two so called experts on automotive issues didn't know that it was a requirement.
Never watched the program after that. You claim to be an expert but are ignorant on what is required in the industry.
