May 2025 is a busy month for road safety campaigns in British Columbia. ICBC is holding a speeding campaign and the BC Association of Chiefs of Police are running motorcycle safety and high risk driving campaigns.
ICBC Speed Campaign
Speeding is an epidemic in our province. If you drive at the speed limit you will be passed by the majority of drivers on multi-lane roads or accumulate a group behind you waiting to pass on single lane roads.
Despite being the top contributing factor to crash fatalities we as a society don't seem that interested in making sure that drivers follow the speed limit.
ICBC offers the following tips:
- Set realistic travel times and be mindful of rush hours and delays.
- Don’t feel pressured to drive above the speed limit. If someone is driving close behind you, keep right and safely let others pass.
- Be extra careful when driving in busy areas - slow down and look for other road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and children in school or playground zones.
- Maintain a safe following distance. In good weather, stay at least two seconds behind the vehicle ahead of you or three seconds on a highway. In bad weather, increase your following distance to four seconds.
High Risk Driving Campaign
During this road safety campaign police in BC will be focusing extra enforcement for the following behaviours:
- Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs
- Aggressive driving (including speeding and excessive speeding)
- Distracted driving
- Failing to use Seatbelts and Child Restraints
The May long weekend typically suffers over 2,100 collisions and 4 fatalities.
Motorcycle Awareness
Information on this campaign appears to be limited to the provision of a few safety tips for both drivers and riders.
