For Sale Signs On My Car

Q&A ImageQuestion: We are selling one of our cars this spring. Right now it's parked in our driveway with for sale signs up in the windows. I understand that it can't be parked on any streets and I need the owners permission to park it anywhere else. I have permission to park it in the parking lot at work beside a busy street.

I looked through the Motor Vehicle Act but couldn't find anything on having for sale signs displayed while driving.

ICBC doesn't say anything about it, although they do say;

Ready to put your vehicle on the market? You can get the word out many ways, such as:

I'm pretty sure that is it illegal but I am looking to confirm my understanding. The signs would be in the rear side windows and not obstructing the drivers view. I suspect they would be a distraction to other drivers though.

For Sale Signs on Parked Vehicles

The Motor Vehicle Act has this to say about parking a vehicle on the road with the intention of selling it:

189 (1) Except when necessary to avoid conflict with traffic or to comply with the law or the directions of a peace officer or traffic control device, a person must not stop, stand or park a vehicle as follows:

(j) subject to subsection (4), on a highway for the principal purpose of

(i) displaying a vehicle for sale,

This is a $109 fine with no penalty points with the possibility of a tow.

Many municipal bylaws mirror this rule and may be used instead. The municipal ticket penalty amount will vary according to the bylaw provisions.

Driving With Vision Obstructed

Again, here is what the Motor Vehicle Act has to say:

195 (1) A person must not cause a vehicle to move on a highway if

(b) the view of the driver to the front or sides of the vehicle

is obstructed.

As long as the for sale signs do not obstruct your view, there is no reason that you cannot display them when driving.
