VIEWPOINT - Ask the accident-and-ticket-free drivers for driving tips

SoapboxBeing a BC driver for 50 years and never had a ticket nor caused an accident, why doesn't the Motor Safety Branch ask me about my driving techniques and attitudes?

I bet there are others in my category that could help other drivers be better drivers.

Better hurry, though, I'm getting in the "Senior" category, too!

As of June 2016 I have been a legal driver in the province of B.C. for 60 years. Got a few more years than that as I started driving underage. I cannot claim I am ticket free having collected a few speeding tickets but I am accident free.

Experience is something we definitely have and it probably wouldn't hurt to ask for a little advice but I am not sold on the fact that just because one has not had an accident or received a ticket that it makes one an expert. Some of it may be just luck and the total number of kilometers one has accumulated also plays a big factory.

In my case I drove semi's for a few years while attending college and still make the odd trip. I also spent till I retired driving on industrial roads throughout the province of B.C. so I have seen all categories of roads and accumulated a few million kilometers over the years.

But just because we are elderly does not make us experts. Next time you are chatting with your friends just ask them a few rules of the road and see how many have kept themselves up to date on the rules and how they are changing. Do they know how to make a panic stop with a vehicle with ABS? Surprising how many have new cars with all the bells and whistles but have never read the Operators Manual to learn how to operate them.

I have to respectfully disagree with the original poster on this. I also have been driving for 45 years and used to think I was an excellent driver. Then I was given the opportunity to take a defensive driver coaching course. Wow. Everyone on the course, like myself, were surprised at how much we didn't know and how many bad habits we had and weren't aware of. Since then I have become an instructor and a driver improvement coach for professional drivers and continually try and improve myself. I don't think nearly as highly of my driving skills as I used to but am a better driver than I have ever been.
Just because you have lots of experience doesn't mean you are good, luck plays a big part as well. I have some friends that I won't ride with anymore because they have such bad driving habits that they scare me, but they have never been at fault for an accident.
