The manual is used by inspectors at Designated Inspection Facilities to guide the approval of vehicles presented for inspection. It can also be used by police to inform decisions on enforcement at the roadside.

Vehicle Inspection Manual is Now Free

In the past the inspection manual had to be purchased, read on line under subscription or examined at your local library if they had a copy on the shelf. This made it more difficult for enthusiasts to insure that the modifications made to their vehicles would pass inspection or not.

According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Notice 04-2025 the manual will be available to the public for download in PDF format free of charge on the Vehicle Safety & Inspection Standards web page.

Interactive Version Is Available On Line

An HTML version of the manual can also be accessed on that page. According to the page, this version includes hyperlinks, appendices, and illustrations to enhance navigation, clarity, and consistency.

A first look at this version on the manual indicates that it will make understanding and using the information simpler for the general public.

Information Has Been Consolidated for Easier Reference

Previous editions of the inspection manual were divided into sections for different vehicle types. The new inspection manual combines them reducing the page count and removing redundant information.

Printed Edition is Also Available

If you prefer a manual printed on paper, you will be able to purchase one from the King's Printer when it becomes available.

2016 Version is Now Free Too

If you would like to refer to the 2016 edition, it can now be viewed for free as well.
