Q&A - My First Speeding Ticket

image of N and L Driver signs for BCI got my first speeding ticket a couple of weeks ago while still on my N. When I first got my N, I was told that the earliest month that I would be able to take the Class 5 test was May or June of this year. However, how will this speeding ticket affect my insurance, driving record, and my right to take the Class 5 test as scheduled? (Other than a couple of parking tickets, my driving record is clean).

Disputing An Excessive Speeding Ticket

Q&A ImageWest Vancouver, Highway 1, going East. Speed limit is 90. Snowboarders in a van with WA plates zip ahead pushing 140 going back home. Following the van I catch myself going pretty fast and slow down. A couple of seconds after that I see a patrol car with lights on in hot pursuit behind me. I though he was after the WA van, but he pulled me over instead... I had my wife, a baby and mother-in-law in the car.

VIDEO - The Science Behind Low Level Speeding

video iconThis video from the Motor Accident Commission of South Australia explains clearly how the risk of a crash increases significantly with only a slight increase in speed. For me, the most interesting point is the idea that we tend to discount the risk because we disregard the speed limit frequently and nothing happens to us.

VIEWPOINT - The Cost of Following the Speed Limit

SoapboxI am 79 years old and I consider myself a very safe driver. I have driven hundreds of thousand of miles, from city bus in Edmonton, to semi trailer from Edmonton to Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Fort Mac. and Yellow Knife, and thousands of miles by private auto. I have never been the cause of an accident, and I have only gotten one (1) speeding ticket. That was not entirely my fault.

CASE LAW - R v Soriano

BC Courts Coat of ArmsMr. Soriano was convicted of speeding and fined $138 on April 6, 2010. He subsequently appealed his conviction to the Supreme Court of BC claiming that the verdict was unreasonable because he was not exceeding the speed limit. There was a miscarriage of justice because his hearing was not fair. The Justice showed an attitude toward him that offended and intimidated him.
