Lane Positioning

Lane PositionAlways leave yourself a way out. This was one of the cardinal rules of the Smith System of driving that we were taught in Regina during basic training. Simply put, always make sure that you have a place of safety to move your vehicle into if something unexpected happens.

Increased Ticket Penalties

Violation TicketEffective February 1, 2004 the ticketed amount for violations of the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations rose by $23. This means that most common violations will amount to $109. Speeding will now start at $138 and go upward from there according to how much you exceed the limit, and intersection violations will be $167. Ouch!

Parental Consent and Control

New Driver SignsIn the days before the Graduated Licensing Program parents had a strong control over their children who had not reached the age of 18. If the child was not driving properly the parent could withdraw their consent and ICBC would cancel the child's drivers licence. This was an effective control over wayward young drivers.

Radar Detectors

Radar DetectorSometimes the simplest questions can make you think. I was asked if radar detectors were legal in British Columbia by a work experience student I had taken out on patrol. The answer is, yes, they are.

The student paused to think this through. Speeding is illegal was the next observation. Yes, that's true also.

Regulatory and Advisory Signs

Speed SignDrivers are often confused about the difference between a regulatory sign and an advisory sign. A regulatory sign generally has black characters or symbols on a white background and an advisory sign has black characters or symbols on a yellow background. So, what's the difference?

Pedestrian Visibility at Night

Pedestrian at NightI read an article recently about conspicuity for police officers working on the highway. It suggested that the reflective vests and jackets that we use to stand out and be identified by drivers at night were not very effective.

Behaviour Around Heavy Trucks

Truck TractorAsk any trucker about the most dangerous stunt pulled by the drivers of cars and pickup trucks and they will immediately complain about drivers who pass, cut in front of the truck and then slow down. Many drivers of light vehicles seem to have no appreciation at all for sharing the road with heavy trucks.
